SUMMARY:Palestrina the Perfectionist
DESCRIPTION:Registration from 13:45 \nImmerse yourself in the world of Palestrina and encounter polyphony at its most poised and refined. The music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina earned him the title Principe della Musica (the “Prince of Music”) thanks to the legend that his writing helped demonstrate to the Council of Trent how clarity of text and musical beauty could coexist. Palestrina spent much of his career in Rome\, holding posts at major churches including St Peter’s\, and working at the heart of the Catholic Church during a period of reform. His music was widely circulated in print during his lifetime\, helping to establish his reputation across Europe\, and later generations would look to his style as a model of compositional craft – a quasi polyphonic rulebook. These motets offer a window into that legacy: music shaped by discipline\, clarity\, and an enduring sense of perfection. \nGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c1526/6-1594)\nEgo sum panis vivus\nSicut cervus\nSitivit anima mea\nSuper flumina Babylonis\nVeni sponsa Christi \nDirected by Scott Inglis-Kidger

SUMMARY:String Musicianship and Body Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Join internationally acclaimed baroque violinist Rachel Podger for a joyful\, hands-on exploration of ensemble playing and expressive musicianship.  This short course will cover gut-string playing\, connecting the breath and the bow\, and also body awareness and body resonance.  Rachel will introduce BOGA (a unique form of “bow-yoga”) as well as Alexander Techniques\, chamber music making and improvising. \nBOGA (bow-yoga) is a kind of yoga for string players\, especially effective when playing with gut strings and baroque bows.  We integrate breath\, body awareness and movement into our bowing technique to explore and improve our sound and expression\, thereby increasing flexibility in our bowing arm\, deepening the connection between our physicality and our sound. \nExercises focus on flexibility in the wrist and fingers and help create expressive and contrasting sounds and articulations\, essential for figurations and gestures in baroque music.  We will explore how far we can play ‘into the string’\, how to ‘speak’ and shape every note and give everything we do maximum meaning!
