Multi-Instrumental and Vocal Workshop with Alison Kinder

Sun. 28th September 2025 @ 10:30 - 12:00

2025 marks 400 years since the death of Orlando Gibbons, one of the finest composers of the English Renaissance, so what better way to honour his legacy than by playing and singing his music together!

In this special multi-instrumental and vocal workshop led by festival founder and viol player Alison Kinder, participants will dive into Gibbons’ poignant and witty madrigal “What Is Our Life?”, a philosophical reflection on the theatrical nature of existence: “Our life is a play of passion, our music the entertainment, our graves the curtains close…”

In this workshop, participants will explore the subtle beauty and rich expressivity of Gibbons’ part-writing, (and if time allows, venture into one of his other contemplative gems on life, vanity, and mortality!)

All instruments and voices welcome: SATB singers, recorders (all sizes), violins, viols, double reeds, brass. Pitch: A = 440

This workshop offers a rare opportunity for singers and players to collaborate in the intimate textures of English Renaissance chamber music.

This event is generously sponsored by the Midlands Early Music Forum.
